Tips For Buying Egyptian Perfume Bottles
The techniques of making Egyptian perfume bottles
are handed down from generation to generation, usually from
father to son, as the profession is mainly limited to men. However
there are several factors which affect the quality of the
Egyptian Perfume Bottles:
- The Glass: High quality Egyptian perfume
bottles are made of Pyrex tubes imported from Czechoslovakia and
Germany. The tubes are of different diameters. The good craftsman
will choose the right diameter to blow the desired bottle size,
choosing a thin diameter to blow big bottles will result in a very
fragile bottle. Also another bad quality is by making it from
recycled glass mainly old florescent lamps tubes. You can recognize
the bad quality of glass from it's clarity weight of bottle and
tolerance.
- The Colors: High quality Egyptian perfume
bottles are colored by special paints imported from Turkey or
Germany, because the bottles are colored then put into oven and
heated to very high temperatures, no ordinary colors can be used,
the colors get into the glass texture, so you will find the bottles
shiny and smooth. Bad or cheap quality craftsman will use ordinary
colors which they can not heat in oven so, they color the bottles
and leave it to dry. When you put up this bottle on light you will
see the brush strokes and if you feel the bottles they are not
smooth sometimes even sticky if the paint is still fresh. This type
of bad coloring will peel off by time.
- The Gold: Never believe it is a 24k
gold, the maximum gold grade used is 12k .The liquid gold painting
is imported from Germany and it is very expensive 1 Kilo (2.2
pounds) will cost around 2000Eur($2500), The high quality Egyptian
perfume bottles are painted with 12K gold. The bad or cheaper
quality perfume bottles craftsman will dilute the gold paint by a
thinner so to get a bigger volume of paint accordingly the paint
film be thinner and they color a bigger number of bottles. This will
cause the gold paintings or trim to oxidize or peel off by time and
never as shiny as the genuine quality.
- The decorations: High quality
Egyptian perfume bottles will have different type of
decoration such as etching and embossing, plus the gold and colors.
Low or cheap quality glass bottles can not with stand etching, so
they are mostly without any etching.
- The manufacturing: The process of making a
regular small high quality Egyptian bottle, will be made by 3-7
different craftsmen. One is responsible for blowing the main bottle
body, second will be responsible for shaping while blowing,
Third for etching fourth for embossed design, fifth for coloring and
gold painting. While other are making the dip tube or small parts
added to the bottles. Cheaper or low quality bottles are usually
done by a fewer number 1-2 so never the quality is as the
specialized production technique.
